OPPC Application
Medium-voltage and high-voltage lines up to 150kV may not be equipped with a ground wire. To equip such lines with optical fibres, an Optical Phase Conductor (OPPC) may be used consequently, where a replacement by an Optical Ground Wire is not feasible.
OPPC Materials
Electrical and mechanical requirements are met thanks to a specific combination of the materials, AlMgSi, galvanized steel and aluminium-clad steel. The actual communication elements - the glass fibres - are arranged in stainless steel loose tubes which, together with a moisture repellent gel, form optimum protection against moisture.
OPPC Design
Starting with a core wire made of aluminium, AlMgSi, steel or aluminium-clad steel wire, a combination of stainless steel loose tubes and the above materials are stranded in the first layer, with one or more layers in addition, depending on the static and electrical engineering requirements. Also the core can be replaced by a stainless steel loose tube.

Up to three wires of the inner layer as well as the core can be replaced by steel tubes containing the glass fibres. The steel tubes are hermetically sealed and, using a special gel, provide optimum for the glass fibres. The maximum number of fibres of the currently largest standard OPPC is 72.

OPPC Tests
Overhead conductors are subjected to high electrical and mechanical stress in operation. Numerous tests are necessary in order to guarantee the operator the highest degree of reliability possible. The following represent some of these tests.
